A tree with few good qualities, in fact I am not sure what any of its good qualities are when you look towards other fastigiate or upright forms. It seems to me that this is one plant we can do without; a needless cultivar for the sake of having a cultivar of a plant.

General Description
A. platanoides 'Columnare' is a very adaptable species and is well suited to intense urban conditions. Not the narrowest of upright shaped trees, about 3-5 m across.
Landscape
Street, specimen and general landscape tree, not very common in cultivation since other species have a more defined columnar form.
Cultivation
Easy to grow in a variety of soil conditions.

A thickened columnar form.

ID Characteristic
Its narrow columnar form and when snapping the petiole, the stem exudes a white latex sap.
Pests
Maple tar spot which is temporarily disfiguring to the leaves but has little affect on plant vigour. Verticillium wilt, although often not fatal unless a tree is in poor vigour: pity.

Horticultural origin.

Dull, deep grey with regular, shallow fissures

Large rounded, pronounced buds, dark chestnut in colour.

Broadly palmate, with three distinct lobes. Leaves to 10 cm across.

Medium textured tree.
Notable Specimens
The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada has one of the nicest forms of 'Columnare' I have seen, however it is not worth a visit.

Budded onto A. platanoides seedling understock.
