General Description
One of the largest of the Restios and quite hardy. Its pink plumes may reach in excess of 2 m and are attractively arching, with the flowers appearing towards the terminals.
Cultivation
Restios require full sun in an open disposition and are best suited to the milder climates where frosts and winters are mild. May be either grown in a pot or planted directly in the landscape. If potted, plant in large pots (60 L) using an ericaceous mix with about 10-20 % composted bark chips for drainage. A slow release fertilizer such as osmocote may also prove advantageous. Keep plant evenly moist as they do not tolerate drying out. When planting directly in the garden it is best to do this in late spring to early summer to allow plants to establish. Keep plantings well watered but provide positive drainage. A layer of coarse mulch will also assist in retaining moisture and provide some protection in winter. Tying the foliage if winter snows are expected will help protect the crown of the plant. Some winter burn may occur, however old foliage should not be removed in the spring until new growth has started to emerge.
