Origin:  China from northern Guangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan and eastern Yunnan provinces. Named after Fang Wen-Pei (1899 - 1983), a Chinese botanist. This species has been placed on the IUCN Red List as least concern.

Habitat
Mountain valleys and shaded slopes at an altitude of 900 - 2000 m.
Bark/Stem Description
Dark grey to greyish-brown with glabrescent, purplish-brown branchlets.
Leaf Description
Very large (up to 20 cm in length), 24 - 34 lateral veins on either side, finely toothed, prominently veined dark green leaves.
Flower Description
Female inflorescence 45 - 50 x 3 - 4 cm, light green in colour.
Fruit Description
Oblong, slightly ribbed and glabrous, 3.5 mm nutlet.
