Description and Growing Information

General DescriptionA fan palm with a solitary trunk and a thick crown of large green palmate fronds with the ability to produce purplish-green to brown ripen fruits.
PropagationPre-soak seed for 24 hours in warm water and sow in containers.
CultivationFor best appearance, it requires high levels of moisture and consistently high humidity. Tolerates a wide range of soils but prefers those high in organic material.

HabitatTropical rainforest areas with high rainfall, sometimes on limestone hills. Lowland rainforest at elevations up to 500 m.
Bark/Stem DescriptionStem, solitary, usually covered in crisscrossing leaf bases; crown shaft absent.
Leaf DescriptionPalmately compound, with very deeply split, dark green, glossy leaves. The petioles have extremely sharp edges, which will cause lacerations to the skin if one is careless.
Flower DescriptionInflorescences creamy-white, stout, pendent and rope-like with small inconspicuous flowers on male plant, spike-like with much larger flowers on female plant.
Fruit DescriptionOvoid with a flat end, 10 - 12 cm in diameter, purplish-green to brown when ripe.
