In its native range it grows at an altitude of between 500-1,300 m in a semi-arid, cool, dry climate that is warm in winter but has infrequent summer rainfalls.

The bell-shaped, pink or pale yellow flowers with yellow stamens are 4-5 cm long and 3-4 cm wide.
