General Description |
Ludisia discolor is a tropical orchid with dark purple-black leaves and small white flowers. |
Landscape |
One of the easiest orchids to grow as a houseplant. |
Cultivation |
Grow in part shade, in moderately moist, well-drained soil and a warm, humid environment. Intolerant of full sun outdoors in warm weather. Has a spreading growth habit so shallow, wide pots are best. Root rot will occur if potting medium is too wet. Leaf spotting can be prevented by providing proper air circulation. It is best to use tepid water in the morning. Use a balanced fertilizer after watering thoroughly, diluted at quarter to half its strength on a weekly basis. |
Pests |
No serious pests or diseases of note. |
Leaf Description |
In basal rosettes at intervals along creeping stems, elliptical, dark green to purple-black with striking gold to red, parallel venation. |
Flower Description |
Small, white, spaced regularly on tall central stalks. |
