This species has been placed on the IUCN Red List as least concern.
Habitat
Honshu and Hokkaido islands in mountain forests at an altitude of approximately 1,400-2,500 m.
Bark/Stem Description
Purple or reddish bark with faint white stripes and glabrous branchlets.
Flower/Leaf Bud Description
Valvate.
Leaf Description
5-7 lobes, tufts of reddish-brown hairs at the vein axils and a cordate base, 5-10 x 4-6 cm. Leaves turn a vibrant red to yellow in autumn.
Flower Description
6-10 yellow flowers grouped on racemes, 10 cm in length.
Fruit Description
Winged samaras, 3 cm in length.
