General Description
Habitat degradation and deforestation are a large cause of the ancient species globally threatened status on the IUCN Red List.
Cultivation
Fairly drought tolerant and is relatively tolerant of wet soils. Young plants are tolerant to shade however mature plants are not.
Habitat
Mountains of Central Honshu, in limestone outcrops.

Brown in colour.
Leaf Description
Ovate, soft and green in colour.
Flower Description
A monoecious species; male catkins are a light yellow, female catkins are red with tufts of violet styles.
Fruit Description
Short, erect and have wingless seeds.
