Description and Growing Information

Landscape
Not salt tolerant, so not suited as a planting in coastal areas. Used as a specimen tree, in parks and on boulevards.
Cultivation
Will grow in a wide variety or soils but prefers full sun until fully established.

Bark/Stem Description
The lower part of the tree is covered with triangular spines that store water. When young, the bark is green and as it ages it turns grey and drops the spines.
Leaf Description
The pale green leaves are 10-12 cm long with serrated margins and are alternately arranged.
Flower Description
The 5-petaled flower is 8-10 cm long and funnel shaped. Colour varies from pale pink, rose, purple to burgundy.
Fruit Description
The pear shaped fruit is 15 cm long and filled with seeds.
